Honda Odyssey 1997-1998 (U.S.)
The Odyssey was introduced in 1995 as the first Honda minivan based on the Accord platform, with a 4-cylinder engine, all antilock brake discs, all wishbone suspension and a four-speed automatic transmission with lever steering column mounted on the hill and a function of waiting, marketed as Logic year. The design featured monocoque construction, cushions, dual glove boxes, two areas heating and cooling capacity by 20 per cent higher than a system of Agreement (overhead rear fan-speed control adjustment, and the main control switch on the front seat passenger), standard rear swing open rather than sliding doors, and a bench Third row could fold and fall into a compartment under the floor of Spacesaver spare tire carried inside on the right, back wall of the cabin.
Honda Odyssey sold the first generation in two trim levels. The LX housed seven passengers with two bucket seats before a bench of three removable middle seats, and two-third row seat. EX housed six passengers (two captain's chairs with the Removable second row instead of the bench) and offered additional amenities, including a roof rack, alloy wheels, adjustable power driver seat height, electric sunroof, remote keyless entry, fog lights (later model years), moldings body-colored side mirrors and reading lamps, and 20-watt AM / FM / cassette six-speaker audio system.
In a cooperation agreement between Honda, Isuzu, Isuzu offered an unbranded version of the Odyssey Isuzu Oasis 19961999. In turn, Honda and Acura offered the Rodeo and Trooper rebadged as Passport and SLX, respectively.
In 1996, New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) has expanded the number of car license, approval Odyssey of the first generation to use the taxi fleet in the city of the Odyssey after being recommended the quick-seven year old son of a member of TLC Advisory Committee. Initial identification of test pilots advantages over so widespread Chevrolet Caprice and the Ford Crown Victoria taxi models, including a greater height (for a better view of the road), headroom, rear legs, footroom rear (front-wheel-drive Odyssey with a flat floor) and the cargo space in the sedan, and the air conditioning vents rear, which did not offer sedans.
Reception
At its inception, the Odyssey has won the Japan Car of the Year (Special Category) and the RJC New Car of the Year. In September 1997, the Odyssey had sold over 300,000 units, Honda became the fastest-selling new cars and beat the record Civic. The Odyssey was Wheels magazine Car of the Year for 1995. At the European launch The Odyssey, which was marketed as the shuttle, the former British Grand Prix driver Jonathan Palmer described his handling as equal all "Executive Lounge".
In a survey of Ownership 1995 survey, 98% of respondents felt that the handling of the Odyssey as higher than the average, 50.3 percent of engine power rating is good and 25 percent wanted a more powerful engine. A review later, the Odyssey summarized first generation reception of the market in the mini-van:
The Odyssey has been moved into the market MPV, which promotes a huge amount of comfortable interior space and versatility
Development
The Odyssey was designed Kunimichi Odagaki by a chief engineer at Honda Research and Development Center, with a team of 20 members in the wake of the Japanese recession of the early 1990s and the possibility of a rate of 25 per cent if the mini-vans were imported into the United States as light trucks. Under the development of the Odyssey, it is crucial to overcome these obstacles and develop a possible set of interior that could use existing manufacturing facilities with minimal investment.
Odagaki traveled to the United States in September 1990 with a small sub-team to carry a review of the minivan market United States. When creating projects, the team is considering changes to the proposed four-cylinder V6 alternatives, when the project was canceled.
Odagaki continued to work with a "metro" team, using as its credo the notion of design a stream of "personal" which in turn led to the original concept car code named PJ. Odagaki conceived the idea of the third seat row fold-in a compartment floor, and he worked with the team includes a central corridor. The team established an internal height minimum of 1.2 meters to keep the path, and for a design with low floors to provide ease of entry and exit of passengers, Easy garage capacity, low height of the roof load, and enhanced productivity on the assembly line.
The team worked to convince management of the project's viability, using extensive illustrations, a scale model of one quarter and full-size foam model. April 1991 Odagaki won permission to develop a prototype.
See: original design drawings for the presentation of the Honda Odyssey, a generation
After wearing the prototype with RHD in the United States, Odagaki won the support of American Honda. The production was officially launched on October 20, 1994, the first Honda model to be released simultaneously through three channels Honda Japanese (Primo, Clio, Verno), marketing The Odyssey through the three channels under the same name.
At its inception, the Odyssey has won the Japan Car of the Year (Special Category) and the RJC New Car of the Year. In September 1997, the Odyssey had sold over 300,000 units, becoming Honda fastest-selling new cars and beat the record Civic.

The second-generation Odyssey in North America was first assembled in Canada, a 1999 model primarily in North America and marketed in Japan as LaGreat between 1999 and 2004. Campaign television advertising for the new Odyssey has evoked moments from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, in particular the extent of the space station docking sequencess and landing on the soundtrack of the Blue Danube waltz.
For its second generation Odyssey was significantly greater than its predecessor, and has adopted the format style Chrysler minivan with rear sliding doors instead of hinges, and a power 210 (160 kW) V6 engine instead of the original four-cylinder. The Odyssey has offered two sliding doors as standard equipment, while some mini-vans only offered one time, a second door is optional. Odyssey provided a power sliding doors that were standard on the EX versions, but option on the LX. Odyssey kept the rear fold-in-the-ground, an innovation adopted by many other minivans. The truck continued to receive updates, such as supply VHS and DVD entertainment systems. There was also a provision Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System, introduced in 2000, which became the first navigation system ever offered in a minivan.
For the 2002 model side airbags have been added and the torso is also standard.
The 2004 model was the only model generation Odyssey second year to receive evaluations of reliability five out of five according to Automotive Information Systems. [Citation needed]. Consumer Reports gave the Odyssey its best ratings in IIHS Offset frontal, frontal Gov't, Side and government in the years 20002008 (there was no test on the government side for the model 1999, and no data available for the 2009 model). [Precision needed]
The second-generation Odyssey is a commercial success. He was commended for his Powerful V6 engine, its manipulation of its four-wheel independent suspension, and functions as a large cabin, sliding doors and folding third row seats. He has won awards Edmunds.com Most Wanted consecutive publishers 19992003 in the minivan segment.
Mid-generational Refresh
The Odyssey also received a significant increase in output of 210 hp (157 kW) to 240 hp (179 kW) in 2002. Have also been added to the year 2002 was a five-speed automatic transmission, side airbags, rear disc brakes, and some small improvements Cosmetic outside and inside. Odyssey remained unchanged for 2003 and 2004 before being replaced by the third-generation model.
transmission problems
4 speed automatic transmission for 1999-2001 models have serious sustainability problems of transmission. Honda spokesman Mike Spencer said the four-speed models were afflicted with bad bearing which could break, the diffusion of metal fragments that clogged fluid passages in the transmission, causing it to move erratically. Honda has reacted to problems by extending the warranty on the transmission of the USA '99-'01 models to 7 years or 100,000 miles (160.900 km). A regulation class action also extended coverage to 109.000 miles (175.400 km) or 93 months for some '99-'01 Odysseys in the United States is Canada not included. Reliable five-speed automatic has been installed in the Odyssey in the 2002 model, but the general transmission did not improve until 2004 according to Consumer Reports. Mike Spencer, a spokesman for Acura, said that the five-speed models generally have been damaged by wear of the third gear clutch pack. As the clutch friction material used, it scattered bits inside the transmission case, plugging flowing lines and causing erratic movement. Drivers may experience slipping little or no shifts, or sudden-quarters of the fifth to second gear speed.
Under certain conditions, another problem of transmission 5-speed arises that the second report could overheat and rupture, causing the transmission to lock. A stream of oil was added to lubricate this machine, but this does not solve the problem compared to the third clutch. The addition of Honda transmission cooler with tow package still allows transmission fluid temperatures are too high. But it has been necessary with a power steering cooler for any towing or warranty is void. The Acura CL, TL, MDX and Honda Accord suffered similar problems.

Honda introduced the third generation Odyssey for the 2005 model year. It grew in width and weight while keeping the length the previous generation and the interior space.
Honda introduced the engineering corps ACE Odyssey third generation, which was then used on the eighth generation Civic. Side curtain airbags and electronic stability control are included in all models of these two features were not previously available.
A host of other features have been added, such as sunscreen built into the rear doors and windows that go down in the second row and third-row Magic Seat "has been modified from design bench to the right to a 60/40 split design to allow easier bending. Headrests can now be left in place when tumbling the rear seat. Some notable features of the restructuring were gloveboxes double and a compartment under the floor Lazy Susan storage, located where the spare tire is gone in the previous generation. The rear the window changed shape. It has a shifter on the dashboard, instead of a column-mounted shifter in generations earlier. The second row bucket seats do not fold into the floor. A place of 'Jump-One More "is optional on the EX versions and more expensive for use with a passenger eighth.
The engine power was increased to 255 (re-rated to 244 by the guidelines SAE new and used in the descriptions model 2006 +) and EX-L and Touring received VCM by Honda, or system of Variable Cylinder Management. This allowed the van to receive U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ratings for fuel economy of 20 mpg-US (12 L/100 km, 24 mpg-imp) / 28 mpg-US (8.4 L/100 km, 34 mpg-IMP) for the 2005 model year. (18 mpg-US (13 L/100 km, 22 mpg-imp) / 26 mpg-US (9.0 L/100 km, 31 mpg-imp) for VCM unequipped LX and EX models.) These figures have been re-evaluated in 2007, bringing the number to 17/24 for the models with VCM and 16/23 for non VCM equipped models. Consumer Reports noted in the number of the 2005 Auto Odyssey was one of the vehicles fuel consumption which was recorded much lower than ratings from the EPA. Acceleration was slightly slower than the production of two models.
The EX-L and more versions can be purchased with both navigation and rear-seat entertainment, while the VHS-based I-VES has been abandoned. There are four trim levels in the U.S.: LX, EX, EX-L and Touring, packing high-end range which includes the integration Odyssey such as run-flat tires and power tailgate.
Only the Touring model is equipped with runflat tires that are designed for Pax run 125 miles (201 km) without air pressure. Pax was not sold on the domestic market due vans tires and availability of service could not be assured. Pax is a single tire with rim diameters inside from outside, a ring support which is a hard ring that is mounted on the wheel of property Pax, a lubricant gel and the wheel itself. When flat, Pax works on the internal support ring lubricated by a special gel. It also included before TPMS tire pressure measurement systems were required by the government. flats run Pax wear faster than other tires original Odyssey by design with thinner edges and grooves on the drive more difficult by the low profile, which reduces the distance from the outside of the tire support ring flat. Pax tires cost about $ 1200 for a series of four or $ 1,600 for 4 winter tires including the cost of installation and gel pack. Pax requires special equipment and training to edit and wheel alignment including many shops not. A gel pack owners is required for assembly or overheating when running flat occur. Some dealers and tire stores very few are able to mount or repair Pax. This makes the high prices and reduced availability. The replacement or repair, especially on weekends and holidays is limited. The only tires for Odyssey Touring Pax Michelin Energy LX4 or are Michelin X-Ice snow. No other Odyssey Touring tire choices exist for 20052007 Despite being on the market since late 2004. Pax has become an option for 2008 models.
Third-generation Odyssey was less transmission problems compared to the second generation, and 20052008 overall reliability has averaged better than average according to Consumer Reports. Problems addressed include the integrity of the body, material body, audio system, brakes and suspension according to Consumer Reports, April 2007. Owners reported shivering operating VCM engine mount and / or questions torque converter. Crash test scores have been five stars in every test but the 2005 had a security problem. "During the side impact test, the driver's door became unlatched and opened. A Opening the door during a side impact increases the likelihood of occupant ejection. "Odyssey has earned a spot on cars and trucks 5Best driving for three years, and a host of other awards. The Odyssey is a minivan first order in the U.S. New maps.

2010 Honda Odyssey EX
For 2008, the Odyssey has received a facelift in Mid-model. All models are equipped with active front head restraints, daytime running lights, and a standard MP3 jack. The grille is similar to the Accord 2008 and taillights have been restyled.
The backup camera, already included only models equipped with navigation, is integrated into the rearview mirror of the non-navigational EX-L. It is also full support for Bluetooth on the Touring model, for all Bluetooth phones equipped devices. Touring models are now standard with the navigation and the plus-one seat in the EX and EX-L.
In Canada, a new entry-level DX trim has been added to complete the LX, EX, EX-L and Touring plans for 2008 and 2009 model years. The rear DVD entertainment system can be ordered on the EX-L trim and standard on the Touring. The DX lacks features such as the "2nd Row Plus One Seat with storage mirror Conversation with sunglasses holder, tinted glass, roof rails, and black body moldings.
JD Powers last evaluation reported an increase in quality issues reported by owners. The concerns are the most common vehicle vibration, the direction of vibration, and erratic operation of the transmission.

In late 1999, a new, more "second generation" Odyssey appeared in Japan and Australia and as Left Hand Drive (LHD) in China. However, this new Odyssey was major update of the Odyssey of the first generation rather than an entirely new model. Consequently, its general shape and appearance are similar to the first generation Odyssey. However, it was 85 mm (3.3 inches) long and 10 mm (0.4 inches) wider than the previous model, while the duration of the show has been shortened. The base model continued to be sold with a 2.3L 4-cylinder engine F23A (ER6 (2WD) and RA7 (4WD), however, the VTEC 3.0L V6 J30A (from the first generation, Now producing 210 hp (154 kW)) was available with RA8 (2WD) and RA9 (4WD). The Odyssey 2000 was the first Honda to receive a transmission 5-speed automatic (3.0L engine with). All the gearboxes of the second generation also featured another first – as a Tiptronic manual mode, known as "Honda S-Matic, a gearbox which remains a classic Honda hydro-automaton, but the driver is able to manage the time of order (If possible electronically) with "selector + 'and' – 'position. The interior was completely new. The automatic shifter old column was transferred to the center console. digital climate controls replaced the old manual controls, and were located near the audio system controls. Woodgrain trim was standard on all models, while V6-L models was leather standard. The interior layout was also modified (second and third line), and the spare wheel has been moved to a new position in the third row. With L and absolute versions, an additional heating of the third row was added. The roof was longer available.
A sporty version "absolute" with all the chassis for the first time appeared. This co-Mugen tuned version differs suspension of the modified behavior of the European car-like, 17-inch wheels and some exterior / interior changes.
In January 2003, the Odyssey has been given a slight makeover. He has received new, more Honda emblems front and back, clear lens taillights (Instead of amber), and a gate further with 4 chrome strips instead of 3. Prices have been reduced by U.S. $ 2,000 (U.S. $ 24,490) for the 4-cylinder and U.S. $ 4,000 for the V6 ($ 30,490 U.S.). In the Australian market, the new Odyssey has proved more popular than its predecessor, at least initially. However, in 2002, sales reached a historic low, and in 2003, sales of only 649 units were nearly one third of the total in 2000.

The third Odyssey Japanese generation of construction was the first complete redesign of the Odyssey since its introduction in 1995. On sale in Japan late 2003, and Australia and many other countries in 2004, he continued with a 5-door body style, with a much smaller more elegant, and more self-similar appearance. For the first time cruise control has appeared on the Odyssey JDM. The 4WD version has received the new DPS. The folding mechanism seat has been changed again. The height of the new Odyssey has been lower than ever – designed with multilevel parking in mind, in especially for Japan. Odyssey newcomers with Honda K24A i-VTEC 2.4L unit producing 160 hp (118 kW), which was the same engine used in the CR-V and Accord. A 4WD version (RB2) came only with automatic transmission, while the 2WD version came only with a transmission continuously variable. The V6 engine has been totally abandoned. Instead, a 200 hp (147 kW) variant of forced K24A engine has been adopted for the Absolute sports version (190 hp (147 kW) 4-wheel drive), which was equipped with only automatic transmission – both 2WD and 4WD variants. In addition, this new engine fuel consumption than the old engine 2.2. All this has led to the new Odyssey become a commercial success. In Australia, the Odyssey achieved its best sales year ever in 2005, and sold over the Toyota Tarago for the first time.
