I love touring Italy – the Isle of Capri
If you want a European tourist destination, why not to consider the island of Capri in the Bay of Naples? This beautiful island popular with jet setters and many other lies in the region of Campania Italy's southwest on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Capri is far from being unknown, it ranks in Rome, Florence, Venice and Top Tourist Destinations in Italy. It is probably one of the most visited small islands in the world. Make sure to see our other articles on Campania destinations in this series, they cover Campania Naples capital, the historic ruins east of Naples, the area west of Naples, and, finally, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast.
British singer Gracie Fields and vaudeville was the first (1934) to popularize the song "The Isle of Capri, the first verse we quote:" It was on the island Capri that he found; Under the shade of an old walnut tree, Oh, I can still see the flowers bloom "around it, where they met on the island of Capri. "Many others recorded this song including Frank Sinatra in 1957.
The island is completely is small, only 4.2 miles (about 2.6 km) long and 1.7 miles (1.1 kilometers) wide at its widest point. In general cars are not allowed. If you're in no mood to walk in this terrain, there are usually plenty of taxis and buses. We will begin our visit to Marina Grande on the north shore of the island, about one third of the way its easternmost point. We'll head west near the north coast. Then we go to the south and east to reach the coast and head especially north. Our final destination is Villa Jovis at the north-east of Capri. There are too many destinations to the list. Depending on your time and your interests, and your portfolio so you can not all visit. Once you know what you want to see, get a good map and plan your itinerary.
Take the Scala Fenicia (Phoenician stairs "), steps cut into the rock, Marina Grande to the rock of Capodimonte in the city gate of the medieval city of Anacapri described below. The view is really great, but you have quite a climb. On the way you pass the Byzantines Castello Barbarossa (Barbarossa Castle) of name of the pirate Saracen which devastated the island. Villa San Michele and its spectacular grounds mark former entrance of Anacapri. During the summer Friday night is the night the evening concert. Swedish citizens engaged in cultural work or research are really lucky, they can stay at guesthouse.
Would you stay forever in Capri? Walk to the nearby Sphinx parapet overlooking the Bay of Naples. According to local legend, if you hit back Sphinx from the left hand while making a wish to be awarded.
Anacapri, population about six miles, is the second largest city of the island. This city is much cheaper than Capri Town, which will be described later. From the main square, Piazza Vittoria, take a chairlift to the summit of Monte Solaro, culmination of the island to just under 2,000 feet (650 meters). Mountainette This is living proof that you do not rise very high in the air for absolutely spectacular views. Incidentally, Monte Solara features more than 850 species of plants. Casa Rossa is a little like old red mansion which houses a permanent exhibition of art entitled "The island painted, depicting daily life in Capri the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Anacapri offers historic churches, including the thirteenth century Church of Santa Maria of Constantinople, the fifteenth century Church of Santa Maria Cetrella, the sixteenth century Church of St. Anthony (known as the Church of the sailor), the sixteenth century church of Santa Sofia, and the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, built in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
The Villa di Damecuta is one of three permanent houses built by the Roman Emperor Tiberius. Only a short drive to Anacapri. If the weather is good and you feel a bit ambitious, you can walk in about 30-40 minutes. Do not forget to visit the tower and two rooms which were deemed shelter was Tiberius. This villa may have been affected by the ash of Vesuvius erupting in 79 AD destroyed the nearby cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Villa di Damecuta actually served strong when the English and French fought for possession of Capri.
The famous Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto) on the north coast of Capri is located just two miles (three kilometers) from Anacapri. Some believe that this tourist attraction Capri put on the map, so to speak. To enter the cave you have to sleep in a small boat making its narrow passage. The windy days of the cave is closed to traffic because of the waves. The beautiful blue color of the water inside the cave must be seen to be believed. As added bonus items in the water takes on a silvery color. On the downside you may have to wait a long time outside the cave, before assigned to spend your few minutes inside. The best view is between 11 am and 1 pm.
With a population of over seven miles Capri town is largest municipality of the island. You can get there by Train, bus or taxi from the port. If you're ambitious, you can ride your way. The center is officially called Piazza Umberto I, but most people say the house at the Piazzetta Cerio Ignazio Museo Caprense (Ignazio Cerio Centre of Capri) the name of a doctor archaeologist and naturalist. His two miles can be seen in specimens from Capri and the world.
Our next step is the beautiful Giardini di Ausgusto (Gardens Augustus), who did not belong to the Roman emperor Augustus, but Friedrich Alfred Krupp, son of the founder of a German industrial empire. Krupp lived in Capri, in the late nineteenth century and built a villa on the Roman ruins. He later donated the gardens of the city of Capri. A nearby road, Via Krupp, a staircase carved in the rock. Unfortunately, it is closed to the public.
Our final stopping point is the Villa Jovis, the largest of the twelve villas built by the Emperor Tiberius to honor twelve Roman gods. The view is what one might expect from a top-of-nature of the rule – the world-of- villa. There is a cliff and you can guess its use because there were no checks and balances at that time.
What about food? One can imagine that precious little food now stands on this island luxury. At the same time restaurants Luxury abounds. You can probably find whatever you want cooked to order. And much of the food is grown nearby.
Let's offers a sample menu, among others. Insalata Caprese Begin (mozzarella, tomato, basil and olive oil). Then, try went Ravioli Caprese (Parmesan and ricotta ravioli with egg). For dessert, indulge yourself with Torta Caprese (chocolate cake and almonds). Make sure you increase your enjoyment Dining by including local wines with your meal.
We conclude with a look on the wine of Campania. Campania ranks No. 9 among the 20 regions Italian when it comes to the area under wine grapes and the total annual production of wine. The region produces about 64% red and near 36% white wine, as there is little pink. Campania produces 17 DOC wines. DOC means Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which can be translated as Denomination of Controlled Origin, undoubtedly a high quality wine. The G stands garantita DOCG, but it is actually no guarantee that such wines are truly superior. Only 2.8% of the wines of Campania door DOC or DOCG designation. There are three DOCG wines: the red Taurasi, the white Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino white. I tasted the Fiano and found high quality.
Capri has been well known for its wines even before becoming the seat of the Roman Empire. As an expression of continuity Capri vineyards are located in the ruins of villas of Tiberius. Capri actually produces its own wine, imaginatively named Capri DOC. Capri DOC wine is mainly race white, but may be red. Both wines are made from Italian grape varieties with a certain specified percentage of local grapes. Because the local real estate is very expensive, producers may try to override the vineyard effectively dilute the wine. Make sure that when you pay for the wine you are not Capri buying wine from the nearby island of Ischia.
