How to nationalize the British Railways?
If I understand correctly, the network infrastructure itself is essentially nationalized anyway since no profit Network Rail replaced Railtrack failed. The operation of these links is franchised. So, would not be a renationalisation simple matter of not renewing the franchise licenses to private companies?
The political party committed a re-nationalization of the rail system is the Green Party. One of the problems that beset the former British Rail system was the lack of investment. Unfortunately, a nationalized industry is subject to the whims of government, unless there are strict laws in place measures such as limiting the government cutbacks, etc. It was one of the objections to the nationalization, in the first place. full nationalization of the rail system, not just the rail network, would make sense, but it must be more accountable to the people it serves and there must be safeguards to avoid a repeat of the massive cuts that occurred in the 1960s.
