Bulleid Light Pacifics Why some rebuilt, but not all?
All Locomotives Merchant Navy class were rebuilt, but Only about half of the West Country and Battle of Britain classes. The reason simply being that modernization has made in rebuilding group and whole class has been considered uneconomical – IMO a false economy because the locomotives were unrebuilt heavy on coal, needs more TLC and were more difficult to maintain because of their "air-smoothed casing. Rebuilding produced a machine that was more or less like the standard Pacific BR, with the exception of the smoke box door and wheels boxpok oval. The debate still rages about whether the reconstruction was justified. That Suffice to say that victims of bullying had some original ideas on the steam. He was an innovator and has reached the pinnacle of his career when the United Kingdom through a crucial period. Its solutions have worked then, but the era of post-war railway cast in a different mold.
