Grayrigg derailment
Incident
Train 1S83, the 17: 15 Virgin West Coast Pendolino West Coast Main Line express service from London Euston to Glasgow Central derailed by a faulty set of points. The train traveled up reported at 155 km / h (96 mph) when it derailed. The train, consisting of 390,033 units "of the city of Glasgow, which was built at Washwood Heath, Birmingham in 2002, had nine cars and 105 passengers and directed four members of staff.

Passengers said that the cars of the train began rocking and swaying very badly before the train crashed. The train was reported as evacuated around midnight. Emergency crews scanned the train with thermal imaging equipment to ensure there one was still inside. Up to 500 rescue workers attended the scene, with at least 12 ambulances in at least five fire trucks, three of the Royal Air Force Sea King helicopters, three civilian teams of mountain rescue and the RAF Leeming Mountain Rescue Team and a Merseyside Police helicopter. The rescue operation was hampered by rain, darkness, and the problems caused by the access of small country roads and muddy fields. Emergency vehicles have experienced difficult conditions, need to be towed by a farm vehicle or tractor, after from sinking into the mud.
North West Ambulance Service first reported that the train was six cars long and the second car had slipped off a slope, with the trapping transport up to eight people. Later, a BBC News on the scene reported that all but one car was reversed.
Live BBC television coverage at 8:15 the next morning showed that although the whole train had derailed cars were standing near the rear upright to the sleepers and ballast. standard class, before the five cars, were the most affected, and the four First class cars behind were less affected. The transport of the foreground, a bus driver, had headed down the embankment, and turned end to the end as he fell. He was lying on his side at the foot of the dam. The second car was stabbed the first jack-cons, the breaking of the coupling and therefore did not follow the bank. The second car stopped some distance further down the runway at a steep angle with one end in the air. The central part of the train on its side down the embankment. All cars remained structurally intact, with damage mostly limited to areas of strain at their ends. Most injuries occurred in the two front cars. The driver, who remained at the controls, was imprisoned for nearly an hour while specialist cutting equipment was used to release it from his cabin. Three Other crew members were in the back of the first class train.
Survivors were first received at school Primary Grayrigg, which had been opened as a reception center for survivors. Hospitals in the region, including some on the Scottish border in Dumfries and Galloway have been put on hold, but not all patients received. According to BBC News, five passengers were admitted to the Royal Preston Hospital critical condition. The police later issued a statement revealing that a passenger, aged 84, Margaret Masson from Glasgow, died after being admitted to the hospital. His funeral was held March 31, 2007 at Craigton Crematorium in Glasgow.

Consequences
A focal point with Families was established in Glasgow Central Station for concerned parents.
Within three hours of the accident site had been closed with a cord five miles. The line would be closed for two weeks, with Virgin Trains said the line would not reopen to passenger services until March 12, 2007. The recovery operation was hampered by problems getting heavy lifting equipment on site which required the temporary roads will be built.
Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Group chairman, visited the scene of the accident at 11:00 the next morning to comment on the incident. During his news conference where he said he considered the driver, Iain Black Dumbarton appointed as a hero, as he remained in his seat to ensure the safety of passengers. Mr. Black has left the hospital in late March and stated that "I must be in the cabin to help train and it never crossed my mind to leave. "
Branson also thanked later, residents premises for their assistance in the scene, describing how he "was very impressed to hear how these brave people rallied, opening their hearts and open their doors to strangers in distress. "Local farmers assisted the emergency services by transport equipment using ATV and four wheel drive vehicles. Sergeant Jo Fawcett, of Cumbria Police also gave thanks, saying that "There are so many people who have given up their time to contribute in some way to cope with the consequences of the accident it would be unfair to name them for fear of missing someone. "
Sir Richard Branson also paid tribute to the Pendolino train, comparing it to a "reservoir". He also added: "If the train had been old stock, the number of injuries and deaths would have been" Horrible.
Because of the suspicion that the points defective were the cause of the accident, Network Rail checked more than 700 sets of points similar across the country as a precautionary measure " tailor later said that "nothing of concern" had been found.
The operation to remove the train from the site began evening of 1 March 2007 with the first cars moved from the dam. This has enabled the property of passengers to be recovered and given investigators with access to the interior of the train, which previously had not been possible because it would have been dangerous. The last of the cars were removed March 4, 2007 and the A685 road has been reopened.
The trains ran on the line again on March 12 subject to speed limit of 80 kmh (50 mph) instead of the accident. The first train was 05: 10 Manchester to Glasgow.
Cause
Core Framework Lambrigg, 660 yards (600 m) southwest of the crash site, control the two filters, each comprising two sets of points allowing trains to move from one operation line to another in case of emergency or during maintenance of the tracks. These points are used only occasionally, locally operated According to a statement obtained from box Carlisle power signal. They are normally locked in the main line "run" position. Early statements by the Chief Superintendent Martyn Ripley of British Transport Police suggested that investigations focus on these points.
Investigations was launched by the Directorate General of Rail Accident Investigation and Inspection of railways Her Majesty. RMT rail leader union Bob Crow said on BBC News that a failure of points was responsible for the incident. Experts have compared the case to that of the Potters Bar rail crash in 2002.
On 26 February, an interim report published by the Directorate General of Rail Accident Investigation said current progress of the investigation. The report contains only one conclusion, that the immediate cause of the accident was the condition of the whole stretcher bars at points 2B at Lambrigg crossover, which resulted in the loss of gauge separation point needles. The stretcher bars (components that keep the blades from the points at the right distance apart) was found to be disconnected or missing. Of the three bars, including one was not in position, one had nuts and bolts missing and two were fractured. The items in question were facing the direction Travel gear.
After the RAIB report, Network Rail issued a statement in which its chief executive, John Armitt, has described how the organization was "devastated to conclude that the condition of all items on the Grayrigg caused this terrible accident." He apologized "to all those affected by the failure of the infrastructure".
The report noted that Network Rail RAIB Rail New measure ran the site on February 21. This process uses lasers and other instruments to make measurements of track geometry and other characteristics such as the height of overhead lines and stagger, and the track gauge, twist and cannot. It is not used to inspect the items, but it does make a video recording of the track that can be considered later. The RAIB is currently examining these issues.
Commenting on the possibility that the video of the train could be used to detect damage points and thus avoid the accident, a spokesman for Network Rail said: "The train inspection [] operates at speeds of 125 mph or 95 km / h on this stretch. There would not someone not look that fast because they would not be able to recover the defects. It must be run in super-slow motion to identify defects. The train runs 18 hours a day, seven days a week. It would probably take someone most of the month to look for a day of data. This is not what is there for. This is a reference tool back. "
Network Rail has admitted it failed to proceed a visual inspection of the track in the regular region on Sunday before the crash.
Bob Crow RMT Union said: "It is closing the stable door after the horse has well and truly locked. We have argued that the process should not replace visual inspection. Inspectors works the track are the eyes and ears of the railroad. They do not just check the safety of the runway, they look at the surrounding area, to detect signs of potential problems, such as gaps in the fence, where vandals could enter "Labour Party MP John McDonnell said:" The fact that Network Rail had apparently pictures of a missing stretcher bar days before the fatal accident is very worrying. "
As part of investigation by British Transport Police, a 46 year-old employee of Network Rail Preston was arrested July 11, 2007 and released on bail. Two other employees of the railway network, both of Tebay, have been arrested in November 2007 and released on bail. All three were due to answer bail in March 2008, but was extended until the end of June pending further inquiries.
On February 9 2009, the British Transport Police confirmed that none of the three railway employees arrested in connection with the derailment will be billed after opinion of the Crown Prosecution Service.
After the interruption of service
Immediately after the accident, all services have been suspended and First ScotRail Sleeper train, the sleeper Caledonia, has been reduced and the passengers transferred to coaches overnight.
Closing the line that followed the initial suspension of service has seen most of the services Virgin end Preston or Lancaster in the south, with buses to Carlisle and all stations along the route. The only exception was an early morning and late evening service from Carlisle to London and back. It was diesel-hauled Blackburn and resolve. There were also several Non-stop trains from Preston to London Euston. all local services terminated short but many have been able to make their trip as their destinations were branches. The Caledonian Sleeper has been hijacked by the East Coast Main Line, as well as cargo services, although some have been transported by Blackburn Diesel and adjust.
The accident site
The area near the accident, south of Tebay in Cumbria, is close to the scene of an accident Fatal rail February 15, 2004, when four rail workers were killed by a runaway track maintenance trailer. There was also a crash there on 18 May 1947.
Glasgow City
The Grayrigg derailment was not the first accident in British railway have a train or Locomotive named "City of Glasgow" on the main network of the West Coast. In Harrow and Wealdstone railway accident October 8, 1952, the locomotive of the train sleeper to London Euston from Perth, whose crew was responsible for the incident, was Class 8P No. 46242 of the city of Glasgow.
