There was always a rivalry twhether GE Locomotives are not as good as EMD locomotives. What do you think?
People on sites railfanning always speaks how GE Dash-9 locomotives and 8 are known to many failures, such as a broken turbo pistons, broken and fires. Some say that the locomotives MDTs are more reliable, as their history proves it. But GE locomotives very kickass! What do you think is best to make diesel-electric locomotives? (This goes experienced engineers and conductors!)
EMD golden age was at the time of the engine series 645 – GP38-2's and SD40-2 were king. When, after the SD40-2, EMD engines began to develop a bad reputation. The SD45 is likely to break their shafts, because of the amount of power from the engine cylinders 20. The GP/SD50s were very unreliable – Many have been rebuilt and downgraded GP38 and SD40 until after only 10 years of service. The GP came and SD60 to face problems with the 50 series, but he was soon replaced by the series 70. EMD has steadily lost market share until GM sold. GE has made the opening and the opportunity with their Dash-8 Dash-9, Gennies passenger Trains, and now the AC4400 Gevos. These days, GE has the advantage.
