Barriers and benefits of promoting independence in older people

Introduction

Company health practitioners and administrators all have differing opinions on the promotion of independence among the elderly, especially since this category People have a wide range of social and health needs. The test should examine this issue in the context of family, service providers and themselves people.

contemporary issues related to supporting the independence of seniors with complex health needs and social

The funding issue is particularly difficult in trying to promote the elderly. Because most older people have passed retirement age long ago and do not have the capacity to take care of their complex health or social needs. Therefore stakeholders such as health administrators and the federal government are seeking ways of financing such projects. In the year 2006, U.S. the government attempted to modernize the law on persons. This was done by providing a total of four billion dollars to assist in promoting their independence. In addition, the Federal Government has also been able to find half a million volunteers who help demonstrate seniors with some of the questions they needed. The same concept can be transferred to Australia. (Koch & Garratt, 2001)

The issue of child care in general crops up when talking about the elderly. However, in order to promote independence, it is necessary for older people to delay joining the nursing homes. This is due to the fact that some older people come into nursing homes to an age where they can continue to manage themselves. It becomes a way of wasting resources. In addition, it also makes seniors feel still need help around them, even when tasks are relatively simple to perform. (The Department of Health and Ageing, 2005)

Another trend in promoting the autonomy of older people with health and social problems is the question of advice. Seniors be conducted on how to cope with their health problems or social problems. The country has many forums board for the older generation. This can be found in health care facilities, it could also be found in palliative care centers or specific advice. The purpose of the consultation is to guide the elderly on how to manage their health problems independently. In close This tendency to focus on prevention. Health facilities and programs for seniors have reported that most complications health than the elderly are in progress can be avoided. This may be avoiding bad habits such as drinking, smoking or eating food unhealthy. However, preventive measures usually work for seniors who have not experienced health complications in the first place. Prevention can be considered as long-term strategy where the elderly are less taught to have a change of behavior. These programs usually focus on the following

  • Nutrition
  • Exercise
  • Preventing Falls
  • Management of chronic diseases on an individual basis (Eliopoulos, 2005)

The experience shows that regions that have such low Cost of preventive measures have achieved positive results. These include improving the quality of health care among elderly and reducing the cost of health care experienced by older people.

Another emerging issue on the promotion of autonomy in the elderly is the participation and cooperation of various groups. For example, homes for the elderly are directly involved in the promoting independence. They can work with faith-based organizations. It is also possible to see that most of these groups usually in collaboration with the initiators senior housing centers and nutrition services. (The Australian Pharmaceutical Advisory Council, 2002)

Importance of inter and intra disciplinary care supply and the promotion of independence among seniors

Inter-disciplinary care is essential for promoting independence in the older generation. The first area where this can be applicable in prevention programs. For example the United Kingdom, some clinics have tried to promote the independence of older people using this approach, they usually get a variety of professionals who speak to seniors about changes in lifestyle. The same concept can and has been transferred Australia. Here, service providers can perform physical assessments such as weight checks, blood pressure checks, dressing minor and other small experiments. The police on the other hand can play their role in educating the elderly on how to avoid injuries home. A significant number of health complications among the elderly are caused by this oversight. In addition, even the fire department can intercept and inform the elderly security in their homes. In addition to this health practitioners can collaborate with suppliers transport to take the services to the community. This can go a long way to ensuring that citizens have the respective higher insurance and advice they need to monitor their health and also to receive reassurance. (Chiva and Stears, 2001)

interdisciplinary care is also necessary in the financial aspects of care. Some seniors may have access to funding for drugs while others may need to transport among others. The country has many advantages under different disciplines. It becomes very difficult for the elderly to access all these benefits to both. Indeed, some seniors may suffer in silence without getting all the funding they are entitled. It would be more effective if a certain number of disciplines have worked together to provide funding therefore help older generations to maintain their independence. (Heywood et al, 2002)

Intra-disciplinary efforts are particularly useful due to the fact that each discipline may have a chance to focus on the needs of the elderly. This means that older people with special attention and can Get a chance to pursue their independence through a specialist support. For example, when representatives of the health sector working together, they can come with the most efficient way to support the generation older. In addition, occupations in the transport sector can work together to provide cities above their modes of transportation specialist. In addition, housing may also meet and seek ways to renovate the elderly. This can go a long way in strengthening their independence because they have strong support from different parts of the social environment or health.

How different models of care (acute and rehabilitation) can influence the quality and outcomes of care provision

Care can be implemented by a series methods. For example, when care is implemented through systems acute and little emphasis is placed on the elderly as a panel is that it is simply regarded as a patient. However, when care is implemented through specialized programs, then chances are that older people can achieve some form of independence in their lives. This is because their ailments are followed with attention specific to their needs. (Davis, 2006)

Benefits / barriers to the promotion of independence among seniors

Promoting independence at home has many advantages. With all, it promotes health Netter. This is because we realize they are responsible for their own health and are more inclined to take care so that they were in a nursing home by someone else can do for them. In addition, to promote independence in older adults also improves the quality of their social life. They may get a chance to enjoy their old age rather than sit around and wait for help. A number of independent programs generally promote socialization by one of the following

  • Cooking lessons
  • computer course
  • Card making
  • Painting
  • Painting Map

All these activities are taught to seniors when they are in groups. Usually the atmosphere chosen for socialization is very relaxed and more of them consider that the activity is fun time. (Killick & Allan, 2001)

One obstacle to promote independence in older people is the perception reported by professionals health. Many nurses and doctors tend to neglect the elderly. Because they believe that their state health have been worn by their age and it's just a natural progression in life. In fact, most care providers assume that people Seniors may be rapidly approaching death. This makes them a consideration in second place (after the younger patients) during treatment. Another obstacle to promoting independence among older people is related to the absence of professional advice of health last. Most health care professionals tend to focus their energies advise young people to prevent spam, exercise, etc. Very few boards of the older generation on how to prevent complications related to health. Therefore, they end by leaving the older generation to these problems, which seriously compromises their independence. (The Department of Health and Ageing, 2004)

Families may also be obstacles to the independence of seniors. When seniors get their independence, they usually go to their parents or children to stay with them. When these children have their own families, they may consider the elderly as a obstacle to their progress. They feel as if their older parents are interfering in family matters and this causes tensions. Therefore, Most of them end up sending their parents to nursing homes where they are very dependent. (Miller, 2004)

Conclusion

Empowering older people is possible and necessary to achieve a better quality of life and also for prolong their lives. Inter-and intra-disciplinary care is needed and is willing members of the family.
