Research Report China's urban rail transport industry, 2009
At the end of 2008, more than ten cities have transportation Total railway length greater than 6 miles. Chinese government had approved plans for rail transport in 17 cities, intending build 65 rail transit lines by 2015, with the total length of 1856 km and the total investment exceeding 675.5 yuan (96.5 billion USD).

According to statistics, the total length of urban transport plans network transport in 15 economically developed countries, including Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Nanjing, Chongqing, Changchun, Harbin, Shenyang, Hangzhou, Xi'an, Chengdu and Suzhou etc., have reached 1700 kilometers with total investments of more than 600 billion yuan (85.7 billion USD). The Urban rail transit line plans in these 15 cities were approved during 2003 to 2006.
Besides the 15 cities listed above, another ten more cities, including Ningbo, Wuxi, Changsha, Zhenzhou, Dalian, Dongguan, Guiyang, Hefei, Kunming, Nanning and Fuzhou etc., are preparing to build transportation urban rail, with lengths provisionally estimated 1,000 to 1,500 kilometers.
In recent years, the construction of speed of urban rail transport in China has been very fast and many lines have begun to build. The development situation of rail transport urban cities with urban rail transport increased from one to ten years and miles of operation were increased to 43 km 790 km from 1995 to 2009 in China. Shanghai and Beijing put forward the promise of building 40 to 50 kilometers per year of rail transport in recent years. The three largest cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou have broken with the Convention for the construction of 4 to 6 lines in the same year with the growth rate of annual investment of more than 10 billion yuan.

Regarding the actual situation is concerned, Chinese investors Transportation urban rail prefer to cooperate with foreign companies funded, particularly U.S. and European companies. In contrast, European and American technologies occupy the benefits regardless of the Locomotives or buildings. U.S. and European companies generally earn in the process of tendering.
The urban rail as an important part in modern cities is the infrastructure essential for the development of the city, which is not only important to weigh the evidence level of modernization, but also the basic guarantee for the development sustainable development. In the circumstances of the international financial crisis, many Chinese regional governments have taken the urban rail construction in the main forces to expand domestic demand and boost economic growth.
