Austin Commuter Rail to transform the "Live Music Capital"
Those who have lived long enough in Austin have experienced some tremendous growth. Since 1980, the population of this ultra-cool city in Texas has more than doubled. In 2006, the population stood at a respectable 709,000 (twice that of "Grand Austin "). Now, as Austin, abundant growth occurred with the style and foresight.
The "Keep Austin Weird" slogan has helped the city keep a wide selection of small shops and local services, while minimizing the effect steamroller large department stores surface so often associated with development. Music, art and culture flourish, and everyone knows the plethora of live music venues here, Austin is also home many galleries, museums, theaters and restaurants. Finally, while Austinites kept their city "weird", they have also kept clean, and have been MSN recognized as having "the Greenest City in America." However, a problem faced by residents of Austin increasingly it is traffic, especially in the Northwest Corridor. But this too will be addressed, in fact the solution is scheduled to begin late 2008.
Solution – Or at least part of it – is the Capital MetroRail, a new light rail service to be held at the beginning of Leander (at 26 miles northwest Austin), through Cedar Park, McNeil and the community of Abercrombie, passed the Highland Mall, across Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and ending downtown at the Austin Convention Center. This section of the Capital MetroRail will cover 32 miles – about nine stations along the route – from the periphery northwest of downtown Austin. The advantages of this sort of rapid transport system in a city like Austin are many, reduce carbon emissions, to reduce commuter time, and even spend a night in the "live music capital of the" most pleasant. Of course, the plans do not stop not this one line.
For taxpayers, one of the best things about this case is that, because Capital MetroRail will be using rail existing line costs will be significantly lower than many other urban rail services. Thus, although city officials are quick to emphasized that the future of commuter rail lines will require a referendum, many Austin residents hope that their neighborhood will be next. The Future plans include a line eastward from Elgin, and a line to the north through Pflugerville. Besides the Capital MetroRail line, Austinites will also able to take advantage of a regional commuter Train which runs from San Antonio through Austin to Round Rock and beyond. What a great time to live in Austin!
