Southern Gospel is giving me the Goosebumpilies
G. Does the South on the Web!
I know, music has been on the web for years. But recently, my soul seems to be seeking more. Especially, the air of past masters. Is it just me or Southern Gospel Music will get soft as the years go? I have a Pentecostal background and being a born again Christian for over 30 years and I am going to say that my appreciation for Southern Gospel has grown, especially recently. Maybe it's just my taste for things of my past, perhaps simply a desire for something more simple and pure. I do not know. But what ever it is I must confess I love it. And love WIDE! And it's only been strengthened by the Internet.
If you are not familiar with the broadcasting Internet music, Well, my friend, out of this cave! There are dozens, even hundreds, of stations that are streaming Southern Gospel music via the web. This is so refreshing to hear bands like the new South Sound Quartet triumphant tallys, etc., and of course all Gaither! As I write this post, I'm listening Cathedrals singing "Master Builder". What a treat!
Back to future
One of the wonderful things about returning to my roots (musically anyway) is listening scan and moving voice of so many great artists. The trios and quartets simply can not be beaten by something that is given us in vain "worship" music pumped today. No wonder so many Christians are shallow. They lack a component of many of their rides are not able to be immersed in the music of wonderful musicians and singers like The Kingsmen, The Crabb Family, Legacy Five and Perry. Groups like these can take my mind up that contemporary music seems simply unable to do. Call me old-I suppose.
Many songs by groups already mentioned, and the considerable number, I did not have significantly contributed to my prayer life. They affect and move me and remind me of things I should have my mind. And that rarely happens when I'm listening to a lot of what happens to the gospel music today. And I'm not slamming the only artists of today as far as I'm a big part of what we use in our churches. (Legacy Five – Strike Up the Band is now playing)
Blunted
You know, I am not sure how I'm far from the good old music. Somehow over the years too wayyyyyyy contemporary gospel music seems to have stalled it much in my life. Unfortunately, for the worse. For me, it's too empty. Too empty. It's never really about Jesus, heaven, the streets of gold, belief, etc. Now I slam through the family together and integrity certainly some of them truly blessed me, but somethings just not the same. He seems to lack the passion of Southern Gospel. Sogo is a bit like country music. It seems fairer and more tangible, more like real life.
Lend me a tenor
Here is a list of quick selection of some of my favorites (see how much you agree with):
Legacy Five – Know So salvation
Quartet Triumphant – I Know I'm Going Home
The Cathedrals – Up to Gloryland
The Crabb Family – Through The Fire (with the Brooklyn Tab.)
The Kingsmen Quartet – I'd Rather Be An Old Time Christian
Heritage Singers – God is so wonderful (I crack every time I hear it)
Ernie Haase & Signature Sound – Give It Away (five stars if they all had a)
The Gaithers – Your first day in heaven and Saint-Highway (Ok, cut me some slack here! It is impossible to choose only one so I just threw Gaithers a dart)
The Hoppers – Shoutin Time 'In Heaven
The Speer Family – It is still in the fire
Florida Boys – When he was on the cross (I was on the heart)
Obviously, this list does not even begin to scratch the service of all hits the time and I'd be interested in some of you find the soul stirrers moving.
Let me put in some kudos for some of my favorite Southern Gospel Sites:
Tunes4Him.com One of my absolute favorite stations streaming. Probably the first station that rocks my computer (which is an iMac, in case you were wondering)
Juniper Square By far one of the great places on the web to buy Southern Gospel Music (and many, many more)
The Atlanta Light Another great site for streaming.
The Gospel Hiway Easy to use and their website does not give you a headache trying to search.
If you have streaming sites you like to listen if please throw them my way. I try! I will highlight some of the best in a future post.
And you can not just listen to Southern Gospel without some extraordinary cuisine of the South. Let me plug a good friend of mine:

The Great Liners 5 – The Blue Water Liners of Shaw Savill and Royal Mail Lines (Video Tape/PAL) Between the 1930s and 1970s ports were so full of life – of barges and tugs, trains and cranes, dockers and ships of every shape and size. Sadly those days are long gone, and most of those once busy ports have been left with only an eerie silence to haunt their once bustling quays. After a ten year worldwide search, carefully restored company film as well as rare archival material enables us to st… |
