The first passenger Car' England 1801
As an Englishman born and bred and a fan of the history of the bus Steam, I think it may be interesting to write an article on the history of the bus as soon as the steam. In early 1800s, steam powered cars were heavy in use in England, but have been exposed by British laws on public roads and forced the owners to run on private roads, like the Train.
On Christmas Eve 1801 in West Cornwall (United Kingdom) the engineer Richard Trevithick took his car to steam (or the "Puffing Devil" as he became known) through his first attempt. After a number of years of research, Trevithick had developed an engine powered by high pressure steam. His vehicle was no longer a boiler on 4-wheels, but it took Trevithick and a number of his friends half a mile up a hill. principle function of the vehicle was a cylindrical boiler horizontal and one horizontal cylinder allow it. The piston pushed back into the cylinder by the pressure of steam. This question is bound by the piston rod and the rod to a crankshaft bearing a large flywheel.
The vehicle has been used for several trips until he turned Trails that were unsuitable for use pack horses in Cornwall at the time. After being straightened, Trevithick and the crew went back to Camborne and retired to a hotel.
The water level has dropped in the boiler and cap blown fuse, sending a jet of steam into the oven when it blew around the embers, setting fire to the environment and the parties wooden motor.
In 1802, a steam coach designed by British engineer Richard Trevithick traveled more than 160 miles from Cornwall to London.
The "Puffing Dragon" was the car in the world's first passenger. Despite the disaster of losing his first vehicle, unperturbed, Trevithick built a Steam Engine 3 wheeled transport, but this time with seats and a real coach like appearance. In 1803, he crossed the street Oxford Street London demonstration tracks and reaches a speed of 8-9 mph (13-14 kph). Despite the short, nobody was interested and when he failed funds, it sold the unit to a local power Miller. Trevithick was the first vehicle propelled car in the capital and in essence, the first bus in London.
The regular bus services intercity bus steam have also been a pioneer in England in the 1830s by Walter Hancock and associates of Sir Goldsworthy Gurney, among others, the use of reliable services on the condition of roads have been too dangerous for carriage horse. steam cars were much less likely to overturn, not "fly with" the client that Horses sometimes did. They have traveled faster than the horse cars (24 mph on four miles and an average of 12 mph on long distances). They could turn half to one third of the cost of horse-drawn carriages. Their brakes did not lock and slide as horse transport (a phenomenon that increases damage caused to roads).
According to engineers, steam cars caused damage to one third the surface of the road that caused by the action of horses' feet. Indeed, the wide tires of steam cars (designed for better traction) virtually no damage in the streets, while the narrow wheels of the carriage (to reduce the effort required of horses) tend to cause ruts.
But heavy road tolls imposed by the laws discourage Turnpike steam road vehicles and left the way open for bus companies on horseback, and From 1861, the tough legislation virtually eliminated mechanically propelled vehicles altogether roads of Great Britain for 30 years, the Act Locomotives of this year to impose more restrictive speed limits on locomotives traveler of 5 km / h in towns and 10 mph in the country.
In 1865, the Act on the drivers of that year (the famous Red Flag Act) further reduced the speed limit to 4 mph in the country and only 2 km / h in cities, in addition requiring a man bearing a red flag to precede every vehicle. At the same time, the law gives local authorities the power to specify the hours during which such vehicles can use roads. The only exceptions were the trams in the street after 1879 have been authorized under the license Chamber of Commerce.
