Steam Locomotive Sheds

Loading coal powered steam liners?

I read a book on the sinking of the Lusitania and includes a discussion of how the coal was refueled in these vessels. Apparently, the Lusitania had longitudinal bunkers, while Titanic was transverse and may be one reason for which the former sank in 17 minutes but it took more than two hours. This led me to wonder how and where coal was loaded in these bunkers. Was it done at the pier or wharf where passengers boarded? Would it have been very dirty? Or did they go at a refueling point – like a steam Locomotive being shed on coaled "usually by gravity from overhead hoppers. Thank you Clive, but I was really referring to ships, where they probably did not want a big and good to get caught in the mess

Coal-ship, as it was called, was in the Royal Navy carried out by each member of the ship's crew, including officers. Usually, This was done by carrying bags of coal up bridges and dumping of coal in the bunkers at the top. A nasty business in which all everyone wore hats and drops etc. bash
